GLOUCESTER RESIDENCE

The design of this new home on a beautiful point in Gloucester Massachusetts took into account the context of an elegant coastal New England home. When I met with the owners to conceptualize the design intent for this home the owners wanted a three car (or more) garage, formal entry and rooms that took advantage of the energy of this location with beautiful sunsets and the endless boat traffic into Gloucester Harbor.

We set our goals on creating this elegant home. The formal entry is a two-story rotunda with flanking curved staircases to the second floor with a small second floor balcony overlook. The stairs set up the opening of the hallway to the great room. Framing this opening down from the rotunda to the great room was a conscious effort to provide the wow effect when you enter into the great room. The great room is an octagonal form that gives the lighthouse effect of full views up and down the harbor. Adjacent to the great room is a large kitchen with direct access to a stone patio with glass railings to maximize views and shed against winds.Further on the opposite side of the great room is another octagonal dining room.

The master bedroom is within the octagonal form again enhancing the opportunities for views ups and down the harbor.

The Basement is a walk out condition with views toward the harbor. The owner designed a new gym and recreation room in the basement.

The garage is an open two-story space with trusses and a natural wood interior. There is a lift installed to move the owners of extra vehicles to a basement location for storage.

Of course, this house wouldn’t be complete without a small sitting cupola at the top of our octagonal form to share a nice glass of wine from the refrigerator on the path to this special space.
